Quitting the businessAfter a rather unpleasant experience with one of my clients, which basically tipped the scales for me into realizing that this type of business is just not worth the hassles it provides, I have decided to get out of the web hosting business. In the nearly five years I have been doing this, any profit I may have made has been only pennies. Between having to nag some people constantly to keep their bills paid and uptodate, having people skip out leaving their account in arrears, people moving their domains and not having the courtesy to let me know, spending time fixing problems (server related, network related, and user generated), as well as just the stress of feeling responsible for keeping someone else's websites up and running, for the roughly $100 a year I charge, it just is not worth it. Last month (January, 2008) we had a server outage from a problem at the data center, and this has very pointedly shown me that I am being required to provide a quality service that I am completely dependent on someone else's control. That is just an untenable position to be in, and makes my reputation completely dependent on someone else. Right now, I have all of the hosting accounts on their own server, and it is operating in the red. The number of active accounts has fallen below the number required to just pay for the server fees alone. I can just see no reason to continue doing this. So, I'm out.............. Pleae make arrangements to get your accounts moved to another hosting service of your choice as soon as possible when you currently paid billing cycle has expired. I will not be accepting renewals for hosting, and will be maintaining the hosting server only until the last hosting account has expired. Thank you all for hosting with me, and I am sorry that this just has not worked out. Rich Zuchowski |
